01 · What It Is

An Open-Source Look-Swapping Engine

Codex Dream Skin is Fei-Away's open-source theming engine (6.2k stars, MIT license — the engine itself is open-source and free). It uses the debug port already built into the official Codex desktop app to inject custom CSS/DOM into the running window, swapping the background, palette, and overall mood. The process never modifies the official app installer itself and never reads or uploads your account data — you can restore the stock look with one click at any time.

02 · How Theming Works

Runtime CDP Injection — the Installer Stays Untouched

The Codex desktop app is built on Electron. On macOS, the local debug port 9341 lets the Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) connect to the running app.
Dream Skin connects to the running Codex window through that port and injects CSS and background assets in real time. The sidebar, input box, and other native controls keep their original behavior untouched.
Crucially, it never modifies app.asar (Electron's packaged application bundle), never touches the code signature, and never alters official code — so skins usually keep working across official updates, and you won't run into "app is damaged" signature-check errors.
Changed your mind? One click removes the injection and restarts Codex back to its stock official appearance.

03 · Install Guide

Apple Silicon Mac, Step by Step

Requires: Apple Silicon (M1 / M2 / M3 / M4) + macOS 14 or later. Intel Macs aren't supported by the official desktop app.

Install the official Codex desktop app ↗, sign in with your ChatGPT account, and open it once so it generates its local directories.
Get a skin package (follow the open-source tutorial to color-grade your own, or buy a ready-made one).
Run the install script — it connects to local port 9341 to complete the CDP injection.
Reopen Codex to see the new theme. Switch between light/dark variants anytime.
Changed your mind? Run the "restore official look" script for a one-click revert.

04 · Official Native Theming vs. Ready-Made Skins

Official Handles Palettes — Not Full Immersive Art

Since March 2026, the official Codex desktop app has natively supported custom colors and fonts under Settings → Appearance — no third-party tool needed for that part.

But the official native theming currently only covers colors and fonts — it doesn't support full background art or character illustrations. If what you want is "a capybara living inside your interface," you still need an external injection approach like Dream Skin paired with an actual art pack.

Before You Start,
Read These

Will it get my account banned?＋

No. Dream Skin only injects appearance styles locally through the CDP debug port. It never modifies the official app itself, never intercepts or alters traffic to OpenAI's servers, and never logs in or acts on your account — so there is no mechanism that could trigger a ban.

Do I pay OpenAI extra?＋

No. Skinning only changes the visual appearance. You keep using your own ChatGPT / Codex account and subscription as-is — the skin doesn't provide or replace any Codex feature or usage quota.

Does it work on Intel Mac?＋

No. The official Codex desktop app currently only supports Apple Silicon Macs (M1 / M2 / M3 / M4) on macOS 14 or later. Intel Macs aren't supported — that's an official platform limitation, unrelated to skinning.

How is this different from the free open-source version?＋

The Dream Skin engine itself is open-source and free — you're welcome to follow the tutorial and craft your own look.
